    A Patient's Guide to Brachytherapy

    Last updated 2 months ago

Brachytherapy is a form of radiation therapy that can be effective in the treatment of many different cancer types.  Also called internal radiation therapy, brachytherapy is distinguished from many other radiation therapies in that it involves placing radioactive material directly into or alongside the cancerous tissue.  This method allows the radiation oncologist to safely expose the area to a higher dose of radiation in a shorter amount of time than if external beam radiation therapy were used.

At South Florida Radiation Oncology (SFRO), our team of multi-disciplinary specialists offers two main types of temporary brachytherapy:  high-dose rate (HDR) brachytherapy and low-dose rate (LDR) brachytherapy.

    High-Dose Rate Brachytherapy

During HDR brachytherapy, the radioactive material is fed into the cancerous tissue using a thin tube known as a catheter.  After a certain amount of time, the catheter is removed and the tissue is no longer exposed to radiation.  Many patients prefer this form of brachytherapy because the treatment regimen requires fewer visits.  Although most cancer types can respond well to this form of radiotherapy, it is most commonly used in the treatment of breast, prostate, cervical, thyroid, and throat cancers.

    Low-Dose Rate Brachytherapy

Unlike HDR brachytherapy, LDR brachytherapy involves the placement of metallic, radioactive seeds into the cancerous tumor.  In most cases, these seeds are the size of a small grain of rice and are composed of radioactive iodine (iodine-125).  In the case of a more aggressive tumor, however, the physician may choose to use a radioactive palladium seed.  The seeds are placed using ultrasound imaging guidance while the patient is under anesthesia.  No incisions are needed and the treatment typically lasts for only one hour.

SFRO helps to ensure effective brachytherapy treatment by involving a team of multi-disciplinary professionals in the therapeutic process.  With the help of our radiation oncologists, medical physicists, therapists, and other dedicated professionals, you can be sure that you or your loved one will receive the most professional and attentive care possible. Everyday Habits that Help with the Prevention of Cancer

    Last updated 2 months ago

The medical staff at South Florida Radiation Oncology (SFRO) is not only dedicated to the effective treatment of cancer, but also to its prevention.  Although some risk factors for cancer, such as age and gender, cannot be changed, there are some ways that everyone can improve their health and reduce their own personal risk for cancer.  Below are some simple ways that you can reduce your cancer risk and improve your wellness every day.

    Avoid tobacco products

Smoking cigarettes or using other tobacco products is the leading preventable cause of many different forms of cancer.  Avoiding tobacco altogether, or quitting if you already smoke, can greatly improve your health and reduce your risk of developing cancers of the lungs, oral cavity, and pancreas.  Speak with your doctor if you are trying to quit smoking and are looking for support.

    Eat more leafy greens

Eating a healthy, balanced diet will not only help to control weight, it may also help to reduce your risk of many different cancers.  When you are choosing foods at the grocery store, do your best to avoid foods that are high in trans and saturated fats, and pick many varieties of fruits and vegetables to accompany each meal.  Avoiding the overconsumption of alcohol can also help to avoid certain types of cancers, such as liver cancer.

    Avoid too much sun exposure

While a certain amount of sunlight can be good for you, staying in the sun for too long may increase your risk for skin cancer.  When you are planning on spending time outside, consider wearing protective sun gear, such as long-sleeved shirts, hats, and long pants.  Sunscreen can also help to protect your skin from sunburn.  For more information about staying safe in the sun, consult with your physician.

The healthy habits listed above are only a few of the ways that you can reduce your cancer risk on a daily basis.  Staying up-to-date on immunizations, exercising regularly, and maintaining a healthy weight may also help to prevent many different types of cancer.  For more information about how to stay healthy and prevent cancer, visit the South Florida Radiation Oncology blog or follow us on Twitter and Facebook.  You can also reach our staff today by calling (888) 823-9162.
