    Exercising During Cancer Treatment

    Last updated 2 months ago

Fatigue, or feelings of extreme tiredness, can be a common symptom of some cancer treatments—including chemotherapy and radiotherapy.  Although there are few medical interventions that have been proven to alleviate these symptoms, moderate exercise has been shown to reduce fatigue and emotional distress while improving cardiovascular fitness and overall quality of life during cancer treatment.  For more information about exercising during your cancer treatment, read the summary below and speak with your radiation oncology specialist and care team.

The benefits of exercise during treatment

Maintaining a regular exercise routine throughout cancer therapy has been shown to be quite safe and beneficial.  Depending on your treatment regimen and grade of illness, you may need to begin your exercise at a lower intensity and build up your endurance slowly.  Even moderate, low-intensity exercise, however, can help to reduce fatigue and alleviate feelings of anxiety.

    Precautions to consider during treatment

Although exercising during cancer treatment is generally quite helpful in alleviating symptoms and side effects, there are some cases in which it is not recommended.  Patients who are severely anemic, have weak immune systems, or have advanced osteoporosis may need to avoid activity or take extreme care when exercising.  If you are unsure whether or not you will benefit from exercise during treatment, consult with your cancer care team.

    Continuing exercise after treatment

Based on data from the American Cancer Society, continuing to exercise regularly after your cancer treatment is finished may help to prevent cancer recurrence.  Studies have shown that breast, colorectal, prostate, and ovarian cancer survivors who maintained higher levels of physical activity after treatment had a lower rate of recurrence and lived longer.

The staff at South Florida Radiation Oncology (SFRO) is dedicated to aiding you and your loved ones throughout cancer treatment and providing all of the information and support that you may need.  If you would like to learn more about staying well and improving your quality of life through regular exercise, please contact our team today by calling (888) 823-9162. TrueBeam: Prostate

    Last updated 3 months ago

Varian TrueBeam technology was carefully developed to approach some of the most complex and hard-to-reach tumors that develop in the human body.  Its customizability and motion-tracking abilities make it one of the most advanced choices for the treatment of prostate cancer, a disease that can be very difficult to effectively treat surgically.  While the patient is lying comfortably, the TrueBeam system can precisely track the prostate tumor in real time and correct for any movement.  This allows for the safe and quick administration of high-intensity radiation.

Receiving a cancer diagnosis is difficult.  At South Florida Radiation Oncology, we are dedicated to the effective treatment of cancer and strive to provide the most attentive and compassionate care to each of our patients.  For more information about our technology and services, contact us at (888) 823-9162 or visit the SFRO blog.

A Look at the Different Types of Cancers Treatable with CyberKnife

    Last updated 3 months ago

Despite what its name may suggest, the CyberKnife Robotic Radiosurgery system does not involve traditional surgery at all.  Instead, it is an advanced, non-invasive alternative to surgery for many different types of cancers and benign tumors.  As a leading radiation oncology center in the state of Florida, South Florida Radiation Oncology (SFRO) is proud to offer CyberKnife in the treatment of a variety of different cancers, including:

    Lung Cancer

Lung cancer is among the most common, and most deadly, cancers in the United States.  With the help of CyberKnife technology, tumors that arise in the cells of the airways can be precisely targeted and irradiated with amazing accuracy—without the need for an invasive surgical procedure.   The motion-tracking ability of the technology also ensures safety and accuracy even with the rise and fall of the chest that occurs with respiration.

    Liver Cancer

Cancers originating in the liver are often difficult to eradicate completely using surgery alone.  CyberKnife radiotherapy and the other advanced radiation treatments offered by the experts at SFRO can help to provide a more successful outcome for liver cancer patients while utilizing pain-free, incision-free methods.

    Pancreatic Cancer

The National Cancer Institute estimates that almost 44,000 new cases of pancreatic cancer were diagnosed last year.  CyberKnife was designed to help cancer patients realize new hope for a healthier life through cutting-edge technology.  Treatment using the CyberKnife system is fast and typically completed in five treatments or less, allowing patients to return to their normal daily activities almost immediately.

    Prostate Cancer

Prostate cancer can be very difficult to treat surgically, as the prostate gland is surrounded by many delicate anatomical structures.  Guided by the most advanced medical imaging techniques available, the radiation therapists at SFRO can target the cancerous tumor precisely, reducing the side effects of treatment by sparing the surrounding healthy tissue.

CyberKnife treatment for cancer and other benign tumors is offered as an outpatient procedure that can be performed in minutes.  If you would like to learn more about the benefits and capabilities of this state-of-the-art cancer treatment system, please contact the cancer specialists at South Florida Radiation Oncology today by calling (888) 823-9162.  You can also visit, and subscribe to, our blog for up-to-date news about cancer therapies and our SFRO Cancer Support Groups.

An Overview of the Trilogy Technology

    Last updated 3 months ago

Cancer is a disease that can surface in many forms.  Fortunately, radiation oncologists, like those at South Florida Radiation Oncology, have more tools than ever before with which to fight the disease.  The Trilogy accelerator is an especially versatile treatment option, as it is the first-ever therapy available that is able to deliver both conventional and stereotactic radiotherapy.  Read on to learn more about the capabilities of the Trilogy accelerator technology.

One of the most important benefits of the Trilogy linear accelerator is its unprecedented adaptability.  This technology is not simply capable of administering conventional radiation therapy—it also has the ability to perform stereotactic radiosurgery (SRS) with unmatched precision.  Unlike radiation therapies of the past, SRS can utilize advanced imaging modalities to target tumors with radiation that is accurate to the millimeter.  This amazing precision allows the Trilogy linear accelerator to deliver higher doses of radiation to the mutated tissue, leading to shortened treatment times, fewer side effects, and improved patient comfort.

Treatment using the Trilogy system, regardless of the approach, is administered by a team of multi-disciplinary medical professionals to ensure treatment quality and safety.  With the help of this highly trained team, treatments are customized to meet the needs of each individual patient in a streamlined and comfortable clinical environment.  In many cases, patients are able to return to their daily activities almost immediately after treatment.

At South Florida Radiation Oncology, we are proud to offer our patients the benefits of Trilogy and other advanced radiation therapies.  As one of the foremost radiation therapy centers in the state of Florida, you can be sure that you or your loved one will receive the highest quality of care and attention from our staff of compassionate professionals.   If you would like to learn more about the detection and treatment of cancer, please contact our helpful staff at (888) 823-9162.  You can also visit our SFRO blog for more information.
