Who is at Risk for Gynecological Cancer?

    Last updated 6 months ago

Gynecological cancers—or those affecting a woman’s reproductive organs—can affect any woman.  There are, however, some factors that act to increase a woman’s risk for these dangerous diseases.  At South Florida Radiation Oncology, our team of radiation oncologists and other professionals is dedicated to not only the treatment of cancer, but also its prevention. Read through the following factors to learn more about your or a loved one’s possible cancer risk and what you can do.

    • Tobacco use:  According to the National Cancer Institute, smoking is a leading cause of cancer deaths in the United States.  Women who smoke cigarettes have been shown to be at an increased risk for developing cancer of the cervix, a common gynecological cancer that is estimated to result in more than 4,000 deaths in 2012.
    • Previous or current sexually transmitted infection:  Sexually transmitted infections, such as human papillomavirus (HPV), can increase a woman’s risk for developing cancers of the vulva, vagina, and cervix.
    • Family history:  A woman’s risk of gynecological cancer can increase if a close family member, such as a parent or sibling, has also struggled with the disease.
    • Age:  As with many other forms of cancer, risk for gynecological cancers increases with age.
    • Obesity:  In recent years, the percentage of overweight and obese adults in the United States has significantly increased.  In addition to placing women at an increased risk for deadly illnesses such as heart disease, stroke, and adult-onset diabetes, becoming overweight is also known to increase a woman’s risk for endometrial cancer.

Knowing your risk factors for any illness can help you to modify unhealthy habits and take an active role in ensuring a healthy future.  Regular PAP tests and other screenings can also help to detect cancer at its earliest stages.  If you would like to find out more about cancer prevention and treatment, call the experienced physicians and staff of South Florida Radiation Oncology at (888) 823-9162 today.  You can also visit and subscribe to our SFRO blog for more helpful information.

How Radiation Therapy Works Against Cancer

    Last updated 6 months ago

South Florida Radiation Oncology's first priority is to provide the most advanced therapeutic techniques and treatment available for our patients. From CyberKnife® stereotactic radiosurgery to TrueBeam™ technology, our treatments can often provide improved accuracy and patient comfort, while also reducing the time needed in treatment.  If you are scheduled for radiation therapy, you may be wondering how exactly this technology works to fight cancer.  Read through this brief guide to learn more.

Although there are over one hundred types of cancer, all begin the exact same way—as mutated cells that proliferate out of control.  These mutated cells normally divide and grow much faster than normal adult cells; therefore, they must also replicate their genetic material, or DNA, at a faster rate.  To shrink cancerous tumors or prevent their growth, radiation therapy utilizes high-energy radiation to damage the diseased cell’s genetic material.  Once the DNA is compromised, the cell is killed and eliminated naturally by the body.

Unfortunately, the ability of radiation therapy to damage a cell’s DNA is not just limited to cancerous cells.  This form of cancer treatment also has the ability to damage healthy cells surrounding the site of the tumor.  Thanks to recent technological developments, however, beams of therapeutic radiation can now be aimed at the cancer cells with incredible accuracy using state-of-the-art medical imaging.  These new technologies, including the CyberKnife® and others offered at SFRO, can significantly reduce the side effects associated with the radiation treatment of the recent past.

If you have recently received a cancer diagnosis, or if you have questions about treatment and prevention, do not hesitate in contacting the staff at South Florida Radiation Oncology.  As a team, we focus on the health and well-being of the whole patient, offering support groups, massage therapy, and much more.  Find out more about what we have to offer you and your loved ones by calling us at (888) 823-9162 or visiting our Facebook page.
