The Difference Between Benign and Malignant Tumors

Last updated 2 days 15 hours ago

Tumors are not always cancerous—some can be designated as noncancerous, or benign. While malignant (cancerous) growths grow aggressively and have the ability to spread to other parts of the body, benign tumors tend to grow rather slowly. Benign tumors also lack the ability to migrate, or metastasize, to other parts of the body using the circulatory or lymphatic systems; they will almost always remain in the tissue from which they originated. Over time, however, benign tumors can grow extremely large and lead to a variety of symptoms due to nerve impingement or compression of nearby structures.

The professionals at South Florida Radiation Oncology (SFRO) have extensive experience in the treatment of both malignant tumors and symptomatic benign conditions. If you are interested in learning more about the treatments and services that SFRO has to offer, call (888) 823-9162 today or visit our blog.

How to Prepare for Your Radiation Therapy Sessions

    Last updated 3 days ago

Radiation therapy utilizes high-energy radiation in the form of photons or charged particles to kill cancer cells. As with other medical treatments, preparing for the experience ahead of time can help to bolster your confidence and understand what to expect during and after the course of treatment. Below are some simple ways in which you can prepare yourself for the process of receiving radiation therapy.

Plan your treatment days carefully. Your treatment schedule will vary depending on the form of radiation therapy that you may be undergoing. In most cases, your radiation oncologist will provide a schedule of the treatment times once you both have come to a decision about what suits you best. Keeping the treatment times at the same hour each session can make it easier to schedule leisure times with friends, exercise, and rest.

Speak with your doctor about what side effects you may expect. Knowing how the treatments may affect you can help you to prepare for them ahead of time. Some patients, for example, find that the skin at the irradiated area can become sore and that loose-fitting clothing can help to ease the symptoms. Talk to your radiation oncologist about what you can expect after your scheduled treatments.

Prepare meals before your weekly treatments. Fatigue is a common side effect of radiation therapy. In addition to getting plenty of rest, eating a balanced diet at regular times of day can help to keep your energy levels high. If you are receiving radiation therapy treatments during the week, you may decide that preparing your meals over the weekend can help you to eat more consistently throughout the week.

The experienced team at South Florida Radiation Oncology is dedicated to keeping our patients informed and confident throughout the treatment process. Who is at Risk for Lymphoma?

    Last updated 26 days ago

In order to fight off infection from pathogens such as bacteria, viruses, and parasites, our bodies contain specialized cells known as lymphocytes.  These cells, also known as white blood cells, make up only a small fraction of our blood volume but are vital in the body’s innate and learned defenses.  In some cases, these cells can become cancerous, leading to unexplained weight loss, fever, or swollen and painful lymph nodes. The radiation oncologists at South Florida Radiation Oncology (SFRO) are proud to provide some of the most advanced treatments for both major types of this disease: Hodgkin and non-Hodgkin lymphoma.

Unfortunately, many cases of lymphoma develop without any known cause. There are some factors, however, that are hypothesized to increase a person’s risk of developing the disease.  Some of these factors are listed below.

Eating a diet that is rich in saturated fats and meats and low in fiber and fresh, leafy greens has been associated with an increased risk for non-Hodgkin lymphoma.

A family history of lymphoma in a close relative, such as a sibling or parent, can also increase your likelihood of developing the disease.

Receiving treatment for another form of cancer in the past has been associated with an increased risk of developing lymphoma

Exposure to certain pesticides, according to recent studies, may lead to the development of non-Hodgkin lymphoma.

Illnesses affecting the immune system, such as autoimmune disorders and some viruses, can affect the development of cancer in white blood cells.

If a form of lymphoma has affected you or a loved one, it is completely understandable to expect expert answers and the most advanced treatment. At SFRO, we are committed to providing only the highest standard of compassionate care to our patients and their families.
